Geoffrey Durham is probably one of the most well known faces in magic, he's appeared on countless TV shows, and is constantly 're-inventing' himself to stay at the top of his career.
His set of lectures are based around his book, 'Professional Secrets - A Life in Magic', and in a completely different approach to lectures, he's strived to make each one different.
The Home Counties Magical Society enjoyed lecture number five.. which I feel was one of the best, as Geoffrey talked about routining, harmony, volunteers and running orders.
One of the first things Geoffrey talked about was Harmony, or the audiences need to have something ‘completed’ an end to an effect, for instance, the torn and restored newspaper. Geoffrey talked about how the trick was perfect and an audience loved it, because the newspaper was restored, there was a logical end, you torn up the newspaper, you restored it, from an audience point of view.. the trick is complete, unlike tricks where you vanish something, to have it not re-appear, these 'complete tricks', from Geoffrey's viewpoint make an audience feel happy, and comfortable.

There is a very good article on the BBC website on if you can 'Copyright a Magic Trick'. The article by Clive Coleman discusses the problems with copyrighting our art, and also includes a very good video of Guy Hollingworth performing 'Reformation'. |

Despite the very wet evening there was virtually a full house for the second edition of "An Evening of Comedy, Magic, Illusion and Mind Reading" presented last Sunday at Twyford's Loddon Hall. Clive Winterton, Chris Marris and Robert Bone were in action before and during the interval with their "in-your-face" close-up entertainment and appeared to be preforming continually, and more important, entertaining AND mystifying.

The October Meeting saw the first .... and hopefully other members will follow the example ... of two lecturettes from our own members. Brian Dodridge opened the evening with a fascinating talk on the Houdini Seances. He had several attractive posters on display and an easy presentation which touched briefly on the early career of, probably the best known name in magic as far as the public are concerned, but concentrated mainly on the latter years when Houdini was very active in his exposure of fraudulent mediums. He covered events which followed Houdini's death on 31. 10 1926 when his widow waited for the "agreed code word" to come through from "the other side". Eventually a medium was able to give her the agreed (and apparently only known to H and his wife) word. The Press were somewhat sceptical of the claims and she suffered continual disbelief during her remaining years. A very meaty subject and apparently still causing a great deal of interest and conjecture ... undoubtedly Brian will have aroused the interest of members present (I shall certainly be re-reading all that I have in my own library). A great start to the evening and this continued as Brian and Robin Maddy demonstrated very convincingly Geoffrey Scalbert's Mystery of the Seventh Card. We broke for refreshments (as always Susan was active in her domain) ... and awaited the second half of the evening which was to start with an explanation of "HOW" they had fooled us so well. Members sat fascinated by the explanation of the 7th Card Mystery and we were taken through the effect stage by stage which enable us to "have a go" with Robin (who played the mental receiver in the presentation) and check our results at each stage in the effect. Brian and Robin had slightly modified the original presentation and without doubt I can see several of us "priming our other halves" so that we can also mystify our friends. Robin then took the floor for his showing and explanation of just a few of his favourite items which covered a modern version of George Blake's "Uncanny Hanks"; T & R Tissue with a lovely cod explanation to finish; a baffling newspaper prediction (pleased that I'm not the only one who uses this excellent effect) and closed with a very strong ESP Envelope Divination. The explanations were very clear and easily understood by all present ... shame of you missed the evening ...'cos we all learned something and I would put money on several using at least one of the effects shown. Make sure YOU don't miss the next similar evening. Simon expressed our thanks to Brian and Robin for a mystifying and entertaining evening .... further offers to present your own "mini" will be welcomed by Dan (aka Fred in the Shed) Hudson who handles our programme. |

Bruce Cervon’s Castle Notebooks Volume 2, Just 500 copies of this book were produced and I have two, one of which I'm willing to sell.. Bruce Cervon’s Castle Notebooks are a holy grail for students of close-up magic from the golden years of the Magic Castle.
A must-have for the serious student of fine, advanced, close-up magic. Within them are held countless tricks, sleights and secrets that were kept exclusive by Cervon for many years, and are still ahead of today’s cutting edge. |

Paul Brook is not a member of the Society, but is a very talented mentalist, known to a number of our members for his effects.
We've heard that Paul was involved in a serious car accident at the weekend on his way back from the Tabula Mentis meeting in London. Reports are that Pauls car was ploughed into at some speed by another driver and that Paul was taken to hospital. We don't have any further information, but we wish him well, and our thoughts are with him. Update: Paul has a number of severely torn muscles in and around his back and ribs and also suspected whiplash.Recovery will take time but the damages should not be permanent as far as the doctors can tell. Pauls bookings and lectures have been canceled until further notice. |

A Number of members are considering heading to FISM in 2009. Cost has been a consideration in most peoples decision to go or not.
Now FISM have now released the hotel prices and a booking system online, this may make the decision easier to weigh up. I've put full information on how to get a hotel booked, plus convention area maps onto MagicConventionGuide.com in the guides section. Approximate cost for a hotel attched to the convention complex, convention registration and a flight (FinAir seems best at the moment) is coming in at approximately £1,500 |

Following Lewis Hamilton success with the Mercedes Benz team, a celebration party was held at the Mercedes-Benz head quarters, attended by 450 team members and guests, along with Lewis Hamilton himself. HCMS Members Richard Young, and James Bryan were both booked to perform at the event, and ended up performing for Lewis himself during the course of the evening.
Richard Young said: "James and I were lucky enough to perform for him during the course of the evening and he seemed to really enjoy the magic amongst all the other distractions of the evening. The feedback was really great from the team the following day and we have now both been invited back to perform at the Christmas Party in December."
Well done yet again to Richard, and to James for securing another high profile engagement. |

Simon Drakes 'The Secret Cabaret' was a collection of 12 half-hour programs consisting of a fast-paced mix of the bizarre and surreal along with traditional magic illusions, often performed with gruesome twists. Originally conceived by Simon Drake, this unique TV series was the collaboration of Simon along with executive producer Sebastian Cody, line producer Frankie Glass, magic consultants Jim Steinmeyer, who also produced and old friend of Simon's Patrick Page. Other contributors included Ricky Jay, Mark Williams, Heathcote Williams and others. Together they created some of the most visually stunning and shocking illusions ever to be seen in the history of television. The show became a cult icon although it was never released on DVD or Video, thankfully after years of talks with channel 4 Simon Drake released The Secret Cabaret - The Creator's Cut, containing all of Simon's Performances from the show. Which were widely acknowledged as the best of this ground-breaking series. Sadly the license for use of the material was limited and is now nearing an end and speaking with Simon he's said that it will not be possible to sell or re-master, and there will be no plans to release the material again. Only a few hundred copies now remain which, no doubt, will in time become sought after collector's items. The upside of this is that you can grab the remaining copies at half their original price (making them £12.50+p&p).. True illusion fans cannot be without a copy directly from www.secretcabaret.com or on 020 7735 4777 Once the current set of DVD's are gone.. The Secret Cabaret will vanish... Forever |
